Short Story - Our Merciful Father

‘Can you feel, the love tonight….’ The sweet melody of the music rang in my ears as I sat beside my mother’s bed. I held her hand to my forehead as she lay there, still as can be. I looked around the hospital room. Outside the glass doors, nurses and doctors were bustling around. Inside, there were different machines. Wires, floating everywhere. My mom turned to me and whispered, “It’s ok. Do not be afraid.” I looked at her, tears welling up in my eyes. “Mom! Don’t go! I need you!” I sobbed. My heart was broken. It shattered into a million pieces as I gazed deep into my mother’s brown eyes. I could sense the hope, that I will carry on what she promised me. Hope, love, promise.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

She gave me one hopeful gaze and a weak smile before closing her eyes forever. Mom’s heart slowed to a stop. A doctor came in, sorrow, filled his eyes. My little sister glanced at me. “What happened, McKayla?” I looked at my little sister and picked her up giving her a bear hug. “She’s gone, Isabelle. Mom is gone.” A tear dropped from her eye as she buried her face in my blue blouse. “It’s ok.” I murmured “She is with God. Our merciful, heavenly Father. He will take care of her now.” Isabelle looked at me. “Will we move in with daddy?” She whispered. “Yes.” I said, tucking a lock of her blonde hair behind her ear. “Would you like to eat dinner at my house?” Doctor Rodriguez asked us. “My daughter is about your age.” She said quietly. “Thank you, Doctor Rodriguez. We would like that very much.” I said.
