Prompt: Summer Memories

“Hey Leah, remember that swing?” Leah turned to her brother, Jonathan, who pointed at the newly painted white swing.

“Sure I do,” Leah replied.

Flashbacks of the summers before came back to life. She saw young, eight-year-old Leah, running to the swings and climbing on.

“Jonathan! Come push me!” Leah yelled.

Twelve-year-old Jonathan looked up from his book and ran off the porch. He gave Leah a small push on the back.

“Jonathan!” Leah whined. “Higher, higher!”

“Alright…” Jonathan sighed and gave her a bigger push before stepping away.

“WHEEEEEE!” Leah screamed at the top of her lungs.

“Ah geez, Leah! A little too loud. Tune it down a bit,” Jonathan complained.

“But I feel like I’m flying!” Leah called from the sky.

Up in the clear blue sky, young Leah tilted her head back and saw a passing cloud.

“That cloud looks like a rooster!” Leah commented.

Jonathan looked up and said, “Yeah!”

“Good memories, they were,” Leah remarked.

Jonathan nodded. “They sure were.’

Leah turned her head away from the swing and towards a large, green patch of healthy grass and blossoming flowers. A tall and large tree was growing there and provided shade for the wooden picnic table.

“Jon, do you remember that field? We used to ride Shooting Star and South Dakota there,” Leah pointed out.

Jonathan thought for a minute and said, “Yes, I do.”

Memories from the summer around ten years ago came flooding back into Jonathan’s mind.

“Whooo!” Leah whooped.

“Giddyup, Dakota!” Jonathan whispered into Dakota’s ears.

The horse seemed to understand him started to gallop across the fields.

“Jonathan! Leah! Lunchtime!” Their mother hollered from the picnic table. She was just preparing sandwiches for her children and husband.

“Coming mom!” Leah yelled.

“Woahh there, Dakota,” Jonathan pulled on the reigns and brought Dakota from a gallop, to a canter, to a trot, and lastly a walk. Leah did the same. Jonathan walked Dakota around for five minutes before dismounting and tied Dakota to a tree. Leah swung her leg over Shooting Star tied her to a tree.

“Sandwiches!” Their mother declared.

“Oooh, yum! Thanks, mom!” Jonathan grinned.

“You’re welcome,” his mom smiled.

“Yeah, thanks!” Leah said. She sat down on the picnic bench and served herself some sandwiches. She was about to bite into it when her mother gave her a stern look.

“Let’s pray, shall we?” Leah sat down the sandwich and held hands with her brother and mother. A square formed around the joining hands as their father began to pray a blessing.

“Yup, I even remember that I was about to bite into my sandwich when mom gave me a death stare,” Leah shuddered.

Jonathan laughed, “I do too, summer memories they were.”

Leah nodded. “Yes, summer memories.”

I stepped out of the house and a gush of wind nearly ran me over. With the wind in my hair and snacks, pillows, and blankets in my arms, I walked down the steps of the porch and towards my treehouse.
