Prompt: Don’t Leave Me

I sat down on the chair next to the hospital bed. The sheets were still fresh out of the laundry and white as ever. I took a glimpse out of the room and saw doctors and nurses bustling around. I took my gaze back into the room where millions of tubes were running around loosely.

I gazed at her small face. Her small, precious face that was filled with laughter and happiness. Her brown hair was left resting on her chest. I clutched onto her hand tightly, afraid of letting her go.

Her eyes fluttered open. My spirits were lifted immediately. I had a sense of hope.

“Emma!” I said.

“Dad?” Emma croaked.

“Emma, honey, I am so sorry about the accident, it’s all my fault,” I whispered.

Emma gave me a small smile.

“My strong, baby girl. Please don’t go,” I cried.

Emma let out a soft giggle.

“Dad, don’t be silly. I’ll still going to be here. My spirit will follow you everywhere you go. Wherever you are, I’ll be with you. Remember that,” She pointed out.

I couldn’t help but let out a muffled laugh.

“Since when were you the smart one?”

“Maybe since mom died,” Emma said quietly.

Flashbacks of her mother in the hospital bed brought back memories.

It’s okay, Edward. Take care of Emma.

A tear rolled down Emma’s cheek.

“I’m going to be with mama and Jesus,” She said. “The question is, are you going to be okay?”

I wiped a tear.

“I’ll be fine,” I replied. I tried to force out a laugh but nothing came out.

“You’ve never been good at acting, dad,” Emma tried to lighten the mood.

“I know,’ I said with a hushed voice. “Your mother thought so too.”

“I betcha she still does!” Emma joked.

She skipped a breath. I gazed deep into her hazel eyes. I knew it was going to happen. I didn’t want it to happen.

“Emma, don’t leave me here! I’ll never forgive myself!” I cried out loud.

“It’s okay,” Emma sniffed. “I’ll see you in heaven.”

She drew one last breath and let it out. She gazed into my eyes and closed them.

“Don’t leave me, Emma!” I cried. Don’t leave me…

I stepped out of the house and a gush of wind nearly ran me over. With the wind in my hair and snacks, pillows, and blankets in my arms, I walked down the steps of the porch and towards my treehouse.
